CAMP SUNSHINE

Epworth By the Sea, in St. Simon's Island, GA, graciously hosted our annual DST Jax Camp Sunshine on

April 23-24, 2016.  Volunteers from our chapter, Theta Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Fraternity Inc., and the Jacksonville, FL Alumnae Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. provided campers with extensive team building activities that helped develop integrity, self-esteem, and problem solving skills.  The theme "Impacting Today for a Brighter Tomorrow" provided an opportunity to develop the WHOLE child by exposing campers to political awareness.

Campers created slogans and wrote letters to express their concerns to the Superintendent of Duval County Public Schools.  We had an arts/crafts activity where they created campaign buttons that expressed their beliefs, discussed political events by engaging in a game of Soul Train Scramble, and created an anti-bullying PSA.  For physical/mental health, campers learned about asthma awareness.  The campers participated in several physical challenges, ending with a high ropes activity, where they had an opportunity to demonstrate their newly acquired skill to complete the challenging course.  By the conclusion of the camp, we ALL had a renewed sense of courage!

At the closing ceremony, participants entered into a reception decorated with red, white and blue stars to resonate with the theme of the camp.  Participants spoke strongly and expressed their feelings of what they believe in front of community members, family, friends and camp counselors as they showcased their buttons and campaign signs.  It is without a doubt that campers have developed the "Courage to Dream"!
