Physical and Mental Healthis one of the sorority’s most vital Five Point Thrust programs.As an organization of over 200,000 predominately African-American women, the sorority is uniquely positioned to impact the well-being of its members, their families and the communities they serve.The Jacksonville Alumnae Chapter has proudly established several community partnerships with health agencies to better meet this call to action as we impact communities and positively change lives.
This year, the Jacksonville Alumnae Chapter has developed a new partnership with the North Florida Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and will volunteer and participate in this year’s race.The chapter will also continue partnering with the American Cancer Society.Florida chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the American Cancer Society Florida Division established a strategic community partnership in 2007 to address the cancer disparities, especially breast and colon cancers, in African-American women.The Jacksonville (FL) Alumnae Chapter is very proactive in meeting this challenge.

On Saturday, February 4th the Jacksonville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. joined-in on the national Go Red for Women movement by wearing red to raise awareness of heart disease, the number one killer of women.
Here are some heart health facts to empower you to take charge of your heart health:
In the United States, someone has a heart attack every 34 seconds. Each minute, someone in the United States dies from a heart disease-related event.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. More than half of the deaths due to heart disease in 2008 were in men.
Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease. In 2008, 405,309 people died from coronary heart disease.
Every year about 785,000 Americans have a first heart attack. Another 470,000 who have already had one or more heart attacks have another attack.
In 2010, coronary heart disease alone was projected to cost the United States $108.9 billion. This total includes the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity.

Diabetes mellitus is a group of diseases marked by elevated blood glucose levels resulting from a defect in insulin production, action, or both. In Type 1 diabetes, the body's immune system destroys the cells which produce insulin. In Type 2 diabetes, cells of the body do not use insulin properly, which is known as insulin resistance. Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90- 95% of diabetes cases in adults.
To bring awareness to the fight against diabetes, sorors of the Jacksonville Alumnae Chapter participated in the Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes on Saturday, November 12th. Sorors volunteered at the registration table and participated in the walk to benefit the American Diabetes Association.
SORORS SHOW THEIR PASSION FOR PINK!
The Jacksonville Alumnae Chapter has proudly partnered with the Susan G. Komen (SGK) Race For The Cure, North Florida to fulfill its mission:“To save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all, and energizing science to find the cures.” On Saturday, October 22nd, 2011 thirty-one sorors showed their “passion for pink” by volunteering at various work stations and participated in a 5k race to bring awareness to combating breast cancer.
The Delta Diamonds’ team raised over $1,700 to benefit SGK which has become a global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested nearly $1.5 billion for advocacy, awareness, and research, since inception in 1982.

Get Delta S.I.Z.E.D by 2013!
The Health and Fitness committee continues its two-fold effort to get our Sorors Delta S.I.Z.E.D (Sorors, Invigorated, Zealous, Energized, and Determined) for Physical Activity.The “Lose to Win: 2013 by 2013” program is a national initiative started in 2011 which challenges each chapter to walk a total of at least 2013 miles by January 1, 2013.Sorors are encouraged to continue their efforts to meet personal and national goals.

BLACK WOMEN LIVE is a video produced by the Jacksonville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. to fight heart disease in women. Representing different occupations and roles we as women play in life, nine sorors make up the cast of this educational and entertaining video conveying a message of heart health. Coronary heart disease is the single leading cause of death for American women, taking the life of 1 in 3 women each year. We want to make sure we take the steps necessary to LIVE!
