INTERNATIONAL AWARENESS & INVOLVEMENT

Where There is Water, There is Life

In answer to the problems caused by the lack of uncontaminated water in Africa, the Jacksonville Alumnae Chapter has built a water well in Malawi and assisted with a water system in South Africa.

Clean water, or the lack of it, is one of the major reasons why five million children in Africa succumb annually to water borne illnesses. The sorority's national initiative has led to a partnership with
Water for Children Africa, a non-profit organzation that provides safe water tanks across the African continent. This year's projects included the construction of both underground and above ground tanks in the villages of Yakamete, Kwa Kitaa, Kamuthanga, Kya Sila and Metuma.

Strategic focus is laced on the necessity of clean water during the Sorority's
International Day of Service (March 12, 2011).  Specific attention is directed to the education and awareness of the unhealthy water conditions abroad via health fairs, dialogues, and collaboration with other organizations.

Through our
international awareness and involvement thrust, Delta Sigma Theta harnesses its vast potential to impact strategically the plight of people living in Africa.  The Sorority will be devoted to the continuation and expansion of its robust international awareness and involvement agenda.

Other National Initiatives

World AIDS Day
In 2008, the World AIDS Campaign chose the theme, 'Leadership'. On December 1, 2008 Delta joined the world in promoting the "Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise' slogan. Chapters across the globe sponsored workshops in malls, churches and community centers.

Adopt-a-Child/Sponsor-a-Child
Delta Chapters provide monetary gifts that are pooled with other sponsors to provide health care, education, nutritious meals and medical care to children in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Central and South America.

Mission Trips
Delta will use Mission Trips to develop greater appreciation of unfamiliar backgrounds and cultures, provide face-to-face exposure of the plight of Africans, and observe and evaluate the effectiveness of monetary assistance overseas.
